Sligo Grammar make winning start to Schools Cup title defence

Sligo Grammar School made a winning start to the pool stages of rugby’s Connacht senior schools cup on Thursday with a 12-5 win over Roscommon CBS on the Mall.

Two tries from the impressive Diarmuid O’Connell guided the reigning champions to victory – although CBS made them work hard for it in second-half with Cormac Dolan touching down for a try with what was the only score of the second period.

The Grammar, who beat Coláiste Iognáid (the Jes) last season to regain the Connacht Senior Schools Cup, are in a three-team pool this time around which also includes Marist College Athlone.

The top two teams from the pool stages will qualify for the semi-finals.

Sligo Grammar’s next game is away to Marist College in Athlone on January 25th.
