Sligo boxer Dean Clancy was awarded national light-welterweight elite title in Dublin on a Saturday evening after his final opponent was forced to withdraw because of injury.
Athy’s Brandon McCarthy suffered a head injury in his semi-final bout on Friday evening and was unable to box Clancy in the decider.
A place on the Olympic qualifying squad was on the line for the winner.
It now remains to be seen if the Irish selectors will confirm Clancy’s place on the Ireland team for the European Games in Poland this summer, which will be the first opportunity to qualify for next year’s Paris Games.
There was disappointment later on Saturday night for Clancy’s older brother Jason who lost 5-0 to Keelyn Cassidy from the Saviours Crystal Boxing Club in Waterford in the light-heavyweight final.
