There were contrasting fortunes for the Leitrim and Sligo’s women’s gaelic football teams in Sunday’s Lidl national league action.
Sligo suffered their second defeat in Division 3 despite a competitive showing against Down at Pairc Esler in Newry.
The Mourne County eventually won out on final scoreline of 2-8 to 0-9.
In Division 4, Leitrim simply had too much for Kilkenny in their Group B encounter at Pairc Naomh Mhuire in Carrick-on-Shannon as Jonny Garrity’s side ran out 7-26 to 0-5 in a very one-sided encounter.
Kilkenny LGFA were making their return to national league football – but Sunday’s game produced arguably the story of the weekend.
Sarah Smith, one of the Kilkenny players, crashed her car en-route to the game in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Unhurt, she got a lift to the match venue and played the full 60 minutes for the Cats.

That’s two wins out of two for Leitrim who, even at this early stage, are strong contenders to qualify from Group B for the Division 4 league semi-finals.
