Slieve League investigation expected to be upgraded to murder

A murder investigation is expected to be launched following a post mortem examination on a body found at Slieve League yesterday.

The body was recovered from the water at the bottom of the cliffs in the early hours of yesterday morning.

While there has been no official confirmation from local Gardai, it’s believed that the body is that of a man in his 60s who went missing from the area last weekend after an alleged assault.

It’s understood that the State Pathologist, Dr Linda Mulligan has travelled to Donegal.

The results of the post mortem examination will determine the course of the investigation however it’s believed that it could be elevated to a murder probe.

Two people, a man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s, were arrested and questioned on Monday and Tuesday of last week and were then released without charge.

A house in the Killybegs area was also sealed off last week as part of the investigation.

Meanwhile an incident room has been set up at Ballyshannon Garda Station and Gardai continue to appeal for information.

Anyone who was travelling in the vicinity of Killybegs/Slieve League between the afternoon of Saturday June 24th and the evening of Sunday 25th and who observed any suspicious activity are being urged to come forward.
