Leitrim teen sent home from hospital with half a finger due to ‘lack of surgical services’



It’s emerged that a Leitrim teenager was sent home from Galway University Hospital with half a finger in recent times due to what’s been described as shortcomings in surgical services in this area.

 

The teenager, originally presented to NowDoc in Carrick – On – Shannon before being referred to Sligo University Hospital and then onto Galway.

 

However after spending some time in Galway University Hospital, he and his parents were told that surgery couldn’t be carried out there and then and was told to either go home or stay in a B&B until a surgeon was available the following morning.

 

The boy’s story was raised in the Dail last night as part of a discussion over the lack emergency surgical services in CHO1.

 

Independent Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice, who called for an inquiry into the case, branded it a disgrace:
