Sligo has highest number of homeless people in North West

Sligo had the highest number of people classified as homeless in the North West during the last week of June.

According to figures released this afternoon by the Department of Housing, there were 51 people accessing emergency accommodation in County Sligo at the end of last month.

This was closely followed by Donegal, with 49 in emergency accommodation while in Leitrim, the figure was 10.

The data also shows that 13 families with 29 dependent children were in emergency accommodation across the region during the same period.

However the number represents a decrease compared to the previous month.

There were a total of 110 adults in emergency accommodation in the North West at the end of last month, 12 less when compared to the end of May.

This is despite an overall rise nationwide – 12,600 people were registered as homeless in Ireland in June – a record high.

The figure provided by the Department of Housing doesn’t include refugees, asylum seekers, rough sleepers, women in refuge centres or the so-called hidden homeless.
