Lafferty ban reduced from six games to four

Daniel Lafferty’s recent six-match suspension following his sending off against Drogheda United has been reduced to four games following an appeal hearing on Wednesday.

The Sligo Rovers defender was dismissed during the team’s 2-1 FAI Cup loss to Drogheda on Friday July 21st, which prompted the FAI to hand out a six-match ban.

Lafferty saw red following a clash Drogheda’s with Kyle Robinson in the penalty area.

The pair grappled and fell to the ground as a cross was swung into the box with the scores level at one apiece with 12 minutes to go.

Referee David Dunne dismissed the player after consulting with his assistant.

It emerged that the length of the ban was not only because of  what happened in the challenge but because of comments the player made afterwards.

Richard Brush, Rovers substitute goalkeeper, received a three-match suspension for the red card shown to him in the aftermath of Laffery’s dismissal.

The reduction Lafferty’s suspension means he will be eligible to return to the Rovers squad for their league game against Cork City on September 1st.
