Sligo Rovers keeper Luke McNicholas joins Wrexham

Sligo Rovers have confirmed that the club’s first-choice goalkeeper Luke McNicholas has signed for newly-promoted English League 2 side Wrexham on loan.

The move is initially until January, with a clear intention to then make it a permanent one.

The Swinford native became Rovers No 1 following Ed McGinty’s departure to Oxford United last season.

He previously had loan spells with Cliftonville and Finn Harps after beginning his footballing career with Manulla FC in Mayo.

Wrexham won promotion back to the English League last season.

They are owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElenney – and the club last week completed the signing of Irish international James McClean from Wigan.

McNicholas’ departure from the Showgrounds means 18-year-old Conor Walsh is set to start in goal for the Rovers first team in Friday night’s Premier Division game against Dundalk at Oriel Park as reserve keeper Richard Brush is currently suspended following his recent red card during a recent league game against Drogheda.
