Leitrim councillor warns that many students are deferring taking up college places due to costs

A Leitrim councillor has called for as many third level students as possible to be included in measures to ease the cost of living crisis on those and their families that are returning to third level education this autumn.

It’s being reported today that the government will consider getting rid of the three thousand euro student contribution fee for 100 thousand students in the budget.

The proposal is included in a paper looking at the cost of going to college, published by the Department of Further and Higher Education.

The paper also recommends the formation of an emergency accommodation fund, and increasing the SUSI grant by 25 per cent.

Sinn Fein Leitrim Councillor Padraig Fallon says that many families are taking out loans to meet college costs and unfortunately many students are deferring taking up college offers due to the costs associated with third level Education.
