‘Cons outweigh the pros’ with Airbnb in North West

The cons outweigh the pros when it comes to Airbnb in the North West.

That’s according to Donegal Independent Cllr Michael Cholm MacGiolla Easbuig who was reacting to a new report which claims that Airbnb has generated millions to the economy in Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal while also supporting hundreds of jobs in the region.

The report, commissioned by Airbnb outlines how it has become a vital part of the Irish tourism sector.

But Cllr MacGiolla Easbuig says with the housing crisis at an all time peak in the North West, airbnb is a direct contributor to a range of issues here.

He also feels that it needs to be more regulated:

In Donegal alone, the total number of guest nights who booked on Airbnb in 2022 was 379,000.

It was 44,000 in Leitrim while in Sligo, the figure is 95,000.

The West of Ireland saw the largest proportion of Airbnb-linked employment last year, with more than 1,200 jobs supported by activity on the platform.
