Impressive Sligo claim Connacht senior league title

Sligo men’s rugby team are already celebrating silverware right at the start of the new club season, following Saturday’s impressive 49-17 win over holders Buccaneers in the Connacht Senior League final, played at Hamilton Park in Strandhill.

It’s the club’s second time to win the provincial senior league title – and it was regained from Buccs, who had beaten Sligo in last season’s Connacht senior league and cup deciders.

Tries from Garry Duffy, team captain Matthew Earley in the first half – and from Kuba, Finn Bamber, Ben Hynes and Ethan Faitaua in the second capped a memorable afternoon for Paddy Pearson’s side.

The trophy was presented afterwards to team captain Earley, by the new President of Connacht Rugby – and proud Sligo man – Mickey O’Hehir.

The victory will leave Sligo in confident mood ahead of the start of the new Energia All-Ireland League Division 2B campaign next month.

Sligo’s opening AIL league game will be away to Rainey Old Boys.
