The Government needs to support the North West with a stimulus package worth 570 million euro.
That’s according to the Northern and Western Regional Assembly (NWRA), who have made the calls in a submission to the Department ahead of next month’s budget.
The NWRA, which is made up of eight counties, including Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal, are also calling for a Citizens Assembly for the region to be set up to examine how regions across the country can be more self-sufficient.
As one of the EU27’s 234 regions, the Northern and Western Region is lagging behind in a number of sectors, including infrastructure and education.
Speaking to Ocean FM News, John Daly, economist with the NWRA, says the issues must be addressed or the region will continue to fall further behind.
