Following the sentencing of Yousef Palani at the Criminal Courts of Justice on Monday afternoon, LGBT Ireland have released a statement to Ocean FM News.
23-year-old Yousef Palani, of Markievicz Heights in Sligo, has received two life sentences for the murders of Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee.
He also received a separate 20-year sentence for causing serious harm to Anthony Burke.
LGBT Ireland say “the hate crimes committed by Yousef Palani were horrendous and had a devasting impact. Today’s sentencing is another milestone in what has been a dark chapter for the families, friends and wider community.”
Paula Fagan, CEO of LGBT Ireland, said:
“We would like to express our deep sympathy with the family and friends of Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee.
Their murders were atrocious hate crimes. We also express our solidarity with Anthony Burke, who was also attacked.
We hope that today’s sentencing will help in the healing and grieving process for all involved.
“The murders and the attack had a significant impact on the LGBTQI+ community in Sligo, the northwest and across the island.
When people are targeted because of their identity, it has a profound effect on the entire community.
“We once again call on the Government and the Oireachtas to pass the Hate Crime Bill and to proactively tackle hate with a national action plan.
This issue must be taken seriously. We need a robust response.”
