A Leitrim councillor says changes to the septic tank grants announced over the weekend may go some way in addressing the problems that many home owners in the county are experiencing.
The Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien, recently announced a 140% increase in maximum payments, which will see payments increase from 5,000 to 12,000 euro under the Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems Scheme.
The changes, which will take effect from January 1st 2024, should result in more households qualifying for the grants and will be used to upgrade or replace existing tanks.
The qualifying condition that the septic tank must be registered with the local authority prior to 1st February 2013, will also be removed.
Drumkeerin Councillor Mary Bohan says the news will come as a huge relief to many residents.
