Extra criteria for community schemes described as “counter productive”

A Leitrim Councillor says that adding extra criteria for participants to join Rural Social Scheme is counter productive.

This month’s meeting of Leitrim County Council heard calls for the Local Authority to write to the three Government party leaders, requesting an increase in the income threshold for applicants of these schemes.

Sinn Fein councillor Padraig Fallon wants the relevant ministers to address the unreasonable situation where travel expenses are assessed as income in determining eligibility for this scheme.

He says it’s already difficult to secure the services of people to work on these schemes and eligibility connected to travel expenses will prevent many from providing essential community services.
