Mona McSharry is Irish Times Sportswoman of the Month for October

Sligo Swimmer Mona McSharry has been named as the Irish Times Sportswoman of the Month for October.

The Grange women enjoyed an impressive October in the pool, winning silver and bronze medals at the World Aquatics World Cup in Budapest.

The University of Tennessee swimmer followed this a few week later by picking up two individual wins in a double dual against Florida and Kentucky, sweeping the 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

This is just the latest success for Mona McSharry this year.

Having made her Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2021 (where she exceeded all expectations by reaching the 100m breaststroke final), in July the Sligo woman booked her spot at Paris 2024.

McSharry secured her Olympic berth when she set an Irish record in the 100m breaststroke at the World Aquatics Championship in Japan.

August saw another high point of 2023 for Mona McSharry, when she won a hat-trick of gold medals at the European Under-23 Swimming Championships in Dublin, signing off on her final year at that age level in style.
