The new Leitrim combined schools gaelic football team lost their opening group match of the Connacht Colleges senior ‘A’ championship on Friday after a 4-12 to 0-12 loss to St Coleman’s Claremorris in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Leitrim was given permission by Connacht GAA in September to enter a single schools team in a bid to provide more competitive football at colleges level.
The new team is made up of players from St Claire’s Comprehensive School in Manorhamilton, Lough Allen College in Drumkeerin, the vocational schools in Drumshanbo and Carrigallen, Mohill Community College – and the Community Schools in Ballinamore and Carrick-on-Shannon.
The individual schools are still allowed to enter senior teams in the lower grade (B, C & D) championships.
Leitrim are in a four-team Group 1 in the Connacht Colleges senior ‘A’ championship, which also includes St Gerald’s Castlebar and Claregalway.
The top two teams will qualify for the Connacht semi-finals.
