Ballymote jockey Darragh Keenan has moved to Australia for the winter season to continue his racing career.
The 23-year-old, who was based in Newmarket in recent years, has now linked up with the Sydney-based Australian training duo of Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace.
“It is somewhere I have wanted to ride for a long time, but I was always afraid of leaving England in case I couldn’t get going if I went back to England,” Keenan told Racenet.
“But I am going well enough now that if I had to go back, I would go back, but if it works out here I would stay.
“I went over to Western Australia when I was 16 and rode work there for some experience.
“I have always liked Australia, I have been interested in the different ways of training horses to what happens in England.
“I always thought I would like to give it a good go in Australia.
It’s understood that Keenan intends to ride in Australia until the end of February – and may then return to the UK to continue the season closer to home.
