A Local councillor says it’s of the upmost importance that Gardai in the north west are informed of the locations of proposed International Protection centres and be briefed in a timely fashion in relation to the movement of those seeking asylum to the these locations.
The comments from Bundoran based Councillor Michael McMahon follow calls from the Policing Authority on the Government to improve their communications with Gardaí over the areas that are selected for international protection centres.
A potential site to house asylum seekers was burnt to the ground following anti-immigrant protests in Galway. The Garda Commissioner has said that Gardai were not officially notified of plans to accommodate asylum seekers in the Ross Lake Hotel.
In recent times it has been mentioned that accommodation in Ballyshannon in Co Donegal, and Dromahair in Leitrim.
The Sinn Fein Councillor says Gardai also need to be briefed on new arrivals moving into new communities.
Cllr McMahon says communications from the Department so far has left a lot to be desired.
