Green Party Representative looks to implement European practices to highlight help is available for those suffering domestic abuse

A Leitrim representative for the Green Party says the increase in calls to helplines such as ISPCCC shows more needs to be done in order to promote these vital services.

Unfortunately a stark increased was reported in the number of children looking for assistance when it comes to abusive behaviour over Christmas.

1,097 children and young people contacted Ireland’s only 24-hour listening service during a three day period in the lead up to Christmas.

The Green party are looking to assign a psychologist to every Primary School, they hope that such a move will help pick up on child abuse, domestic abuse. Alcohol and other drug abuse and the welfare of children in general.

Leitrim Green Party representative Leslie O Hora says local Authorities should follow the example of European countries and place red benches in parks and streets that remember the victims of domestic abuse.

He says the benches could also offer reminders that help is available for those that need it.
