Massive disruption reported following overnight storm



The Clean-up operation across the North West Region is starting this lunchtime following the overnight damage caused by the overnight storm.

 

A man in his 40’s lost his life on the N17 Sligo to Galway road.

 

It’s understood his car skidded in flooding and hit a concreate wall in Claremorris.

 

There are reports of several roads blocked or partially blocked by debris or falling trees.

 

In Sligo Gardaí are warning motorists to take care on all approach roads into Sligo Town.

 

The warning includes the Sligo to Rosses Point Road and the road between Collooney and Ballygawley.

 

The Ballygawley to Sligo road at Union Wood also had trees down while between Ballygawley and Ballintogher there are reports of a tree down at Kilross National School.

 

Similar reports are coming in on the Sligo to Dromahair Road at the turn off for St Angela’s while another fallen tree is partially blocking the road between Ballygawley and Collooney.

 

Gardaí in Ballymote are warning of several trees down on the Ballymote to Sligo Road, however the road is passable.

 

The Ballymote Gurteen being described passable despite a number of fallen trees having been reported on that route.

 

Extreme care is needed throughout on minor roads where again trees have fallen locally.

 

Gardaí say the Council have been informed however it will take a number of hours to clear the damage.

 

Meanwhile in Ballyshannon Gardaí say they have received reports of several trees having fallen over night.

 

The roads include the Ballyshannon to Belleek road.

 

There is also an overhanging tree on the N15 just outside of Ballyshannon and Gardaí are advising motorists to proceed with extreme caution on this road.

 

 

Elsewhere there are trees down on the Keadue to Ballyfarnon road in north Roscommon.

 

The road is passable but great care is needed.

 

There are reports of several fallen trees throughout North Leitrim with the Dromahair area being badly hit in this regard.

 

There are also reports of flooding on the main road close to Kerrigans quarry two separate reports of flooding on the main Drumkeerin to Manorhamilton road

 

Several homes and business are without power this morning.
