Sligo Rovers beat Drogheda Utd 2-1

Sligo Rovers backed up last Friday night’s 2-1 victory over SSE Airtricity League leaders Shelbourne in Dublin with a similar victory against Drogheda Utd at the Showgrounds on bank-holiday Monday.

A Matthew O’Brien own-goal and a Connor Malley strike (his first for the club) gave Rovers a 2-0 lead in the opening half.

Drogheda pulled a goal back shortly after the re-start through their Donegal midfielder and former Rovers player Jack Keaney.

However, Rovers managed to see the game out for the 2-1 win to claim all three points.

Team manager John Russell spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Odhrán Keating after the game:

Rovers also announced on Monday that they have signed winger Stephen Mallon (pictured) on an 18-month deal.

The Belfast native joins the Bit O’Red after a spell at Irish League side Cliftonville and previously played for Bohemians and Derry City.

Mallon has signed a pre-contract to join up with Rovers on July 1st subject to international transfer clearance.

Monday’s win has moved Rovers up two places to sixth in the Premier Division table (see below).
