Lauren Cadden wins European silver with Ireland

She may not have run in the final – but Sligo AC’s Lauren Cadden collected a silver medal on the final night of the European Athletics Championships in Rome as the Ireland women’s 4 x 400 metres won silver in Wednesday night’s final.

Cadden, who ran for Ireland in their semi-final win on Thursday, made way for individual silver medallist Rhasida Adeleke on Thursday’s final, with the Irish quarter of Adeleke, Sophie Becker, Phil Healy and Sharlene Mawdsley finishing an impressive second behind winners Netherlands.

It was Ireland’s fourth medal of the games – and a second for a Sligo athlete this week as Cadden’s silver medal on Wednesday followed North Sligo AC’s Chris O’Donnell, who won gold in last Friday’s 4 x 400m mixed relay.

Ireland’s two gold and two silver at the championships saw them earn a top-10 finish on the final medals table.
