Mona McSharry breaks her own 200m breaststroke Irish record

Mona McSharry has improved her own Irish record for the women’s 200 metres breaststroke – and secured the Olympic qualifying time in this event for the Paris Olympics next month.

McSharry, who was swimming at the Mel Zajac International meeting in Canada this weekend, close a new record time of 2:22.49 in the heats, taking two seconds off her previous best of 2:24.50, set in 2023.

She won the ‘A’ final in the 200m ahead of Canada’s Sophie Angus.

The swim again underlined her impressive form in 2024.

The new time qualifies McSharry for the 200m breaststroke in Paris next month – she is now ranked seventh in the world in the discipline this year.

The Grange woman has already secured an Olympic place in her strongest event – the women’s 100m breaststroke.
