Tom MacSharry rules himself out of potential General Election bid

Mayor of Sligo and Fianna Fail Cllr Tom MacSharry has ruled himself out of a potential General Election bid.

It’s after the Fianna Fail party indicated that it’s seeking nominations for candidates to contest the next election in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency.

Speculation has been rife that a General Election could be called this side of Christmas.

Fianna Fail Party members in this area have been told that they have until 15th July next to submit nominations.

No date has yet been set for the party convention, nor has the candidate strategy for Sligo-Leitrim been decided.

Fianna Fail took one seat in Sligo-Leitrim at the last General Election in 2020 – Marc MacSharry – but he later resigned from the party and remains an Independent TD.

Attentions had been turning as to who could be selected by Fianna Fail here with the likes of Councillors Tom MacSharry, Edel McSharry and Paul Taylor regarded as possibilities.

While south Donegal Councillor Micheál Naughton has also signalled his interest in securing a nomination

However, in a statement issued this afternoon, Cllr Tom MacSharry confirmed that he will not be contesting the forthcoming Fianna Fáil selection convention for Dail candidates for the next general election.

Cllr MacSharry, who this week was elected Mayor of the Sligo-Strandhill Borough District, said that he was looking forward to working on the people’s behalf in carrying out his council duties over the next five years while also continuing work within his busy legal practice.
