Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team release statement following Benbulben tragedy

Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team have released a statement today, following the death of a man on Benbulben last night.

Two men got into difficulty at around 10pm yesterday evening, with one sustaining fatal head injuries.

In a statement released this afternoon, Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team confirmed that they took part in a multi-agency operation to get the man off the mountain.

15 members of the mountain rescue team, as well as two ambulances, members of An Garda Siochana and the Rescue 118 helicopter were all on hand at the scene.

A helicopter rescue could not be completed due to the location of the casualty, and prevailing winds. The man was stretchered off the mountain as conditions worsened, making the steep ground slippy and the operation increasingly difficult to complete.

It has also been confirmed that both men involved in last night’s incident were active members of the Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team.

Concluding, the mountain rescue team said they were devastated at the loss of their colleague, who they described as compassionate and professional, and extended their condolences to his family.

Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team also expressed their thanks to An Garda Síochana, the National Ambulance Service, and the Coast Guard Rescue 118 Helicopter.
