Council seeks meeting with organisers of Gran Fondo cycle

Sligo County Council is seeking a meeting with organisers of cycling’s Gran Fondo in Sligo last weekend, to discuss the management of the event.

The inaugural event which according to the organisers, had close to 2000 entries, drew criticism from participants and local residents in the days leading up to the two-day event, following late changes to some of the race routes.

There was also unhappiness at the lack of communication to the public regarding road closure timings.

While Sligo County Council authorised the main road closures, the event organisers, Titan Experience, were chiefly responsible for communication of event info and road closures to the public in a timely manner.

The time-trial on Saturday and the three longer distance races on Sunday all appear to have gone well enough – but there were large numbers of complaints on social media about the overall event organisation.

Sligo County Council says it is hoping to address some of these issues at its meeting with the Gran Fondo organisers.

The Gran Fondo is an established international cycle event, which came to Ireland for the first time this year – and aims to provide a quality racing experience for cyclists of all abilities.
