Investigation launched into discovery of bog butter in Donegal

What appears to be an ancient slab of butter has been discovered in south west Donegal.

The large rectangular chunk was found on the farm of a local man in the Loughfad area of Portnoo on Tuesday.

It’s understood that the discovery was made by a landowner and other local man while carrying out some works.

While people have been finding bog butter for centuries, the discovery in Portnoo this week is said to be unusual as it was found in soil rather than the bog.

Archaeologist Paula Harvey visited the farm yesterday and believes that as the slab lay in a waterlogged environment, it seems to have been preserved until it was unearthed two days ago.

An investigation to ascertain just exactly how old the butter is ongoing.
