Jim McGuinness to be awarded Freedom of Donegal

Donegal Senior Manager Jim McGuinness is to be awarded the Freedom of Donegal.

It’s Donegal’s highest honour than can be bestowed on any individual in the county.

Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council and Independent Cllr Niamh Kennedy nominated Jim McGuinness for the title at the latest sitting of Donegal County Council yesterday evening.

McGuinness, led Donegal to the first All-Ireland semi-final in a decade this year while in 2012, he oversaw the team then to All-Ireland victory.

He was named Donegal Person of the Year in 2012.

McGuinness stepped down from his role as Donegal Senior Manager in 2014 when Donegal lost the All-Ireland final to Kerry.

He was eventually persuaded back to the helm last summer.

At the meeting last night, Cllr Kennedy expressed surprise that McGuinness hadn’t been awarded the Freedom of Donegal before.

The nomination was seconded by Cllr Anthony Molloy and greeted with applause from elected members.

Past recipients include Shay Given, Seamus Coleman, Daniel O’Donnell and Phil Coulter.
