Salmon death toll in Ballisodare River reaches over 1,000

The salmon death toll in Ballisodare River has now reached over one thousand.

Inland Fisheries Ireland is continuing to investigate the cause of the deaths this week.

More than 1,070 wild Atlantic salmon have now been found dead in the river, an increase on the 850 fish recorded dead last week.

IFI environmental officers have undertaken a full environmental examination of the Ballisodare catchment in recent days.

Staff collected multiple water samples from the catchment, which includes the Ballisodare River and the estuary flowing into Sligo Bay.

They are awaiting findings from a laboratory analysis of these samples.

Separately, they have also received preliminary results from a post mortem of some of the dead fish and will be reviewing these findings.

All fishing on the Ballysadare system remains suspended, following the passing of a related bye-law on Wednesday, July 17th.

IFI’s investigations, along with scientific advice from statutory partners, will inform the length of time the bye-law prohibiting fishing is in effect.
