Dean Clancy first Irish boxer in action at Olympics

Sligo’s Dean Clancy will be the first Irish boxer in action at the Paris Olympics when he fights in the preliminary round of the men’s light welterweight division (63.5kg) on Saturday.

Thursday’s draw for the boxing in Paris saw Clancy paired with Obada Alkasbeh (Jordan).

Were he to win that bout, he would face 2016 Olympic silver medallist Sofiane Oumiha (France) in the last 16.

23-year-old Clancy is one of 10 boxers on the Ireland team.

Tokyo gold medallist Kellie Harrington will begin the defence of her lightweight title in the round of 16 on Monday.

Harrington could face Gizem Ozer, who she beat in April at the European Elite Championships.
