Mona McSharry wins Olympic bronze

Sligo’s Mona McSharry has won a bronze medal for Ireland in the final of the women’s 100 metres breaststroke at the Paris Olympics.

It’s Ireland’s first medal of these Games and it also bridges a 28-year gap in Irish swimming – being the first Olympic medal in the pool since the 1996 Atlanta games.

McSharry pipped Italy’s Benedetta Pinato to the wall by just one-hundredth of a second.

The race was won by South Africa’s Tatjana Smith with Qianting Tang of China second.

McSharry was clearly overjoyed with her Olympic bronze – and revealed that her goggles filled with water at the start of the race.

The Grange woman has little time to rest, as she’s back in the pool on Wednesday morning for the heats of the 200-metre breaststroke.
