A former Ballisodare United and Summerhill College goalkeeper has joined English Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.
Killian Barrett has signed his first professional contract after a successful trial period over the summer.
The 20-year-old first moved to England in 2020 and spent the following years competing in non-league football down in the south of the country.
He had a trial with Reading – but then moved onto the radar of Sheffield Wednesday in recent months – an after a three-week trial period that took in stints with the first team and Under-21s, the shot-stopper has put pen to paper to commit to Wednesday.
He told the club’s official website on Wednesday: “I’m absolutely delighted, it’s a massive step in the direction I want to go and all my family are delighted.
“I moved over to England just over four years ago and have played non-league football for the previous couple of years.
“Luckily I had a few decent games and got picked up and now I’m here.”
The Former Germany assistant coach Danny Rohl was appointed as Sheffield Wednesday manager last October, and Barrett’s recruitment has come during the German’s tenure.
The Sligo man is being represented by former Irish international Stephen Hunt – and it’s understood that former England international and Crystal Palace manager Steve Coppell played a role in tracking Barrett’s progress as a goalkeeper in recent months.
Barrett won a Connacht Schools senior cup title with Summerhill College in Sligo in 2020.
His dad, Adrian, is a teacher in the school.
