Leitrim senior football championship starts this weekend

The 2024 Leitrim Connacht Gold senior football championship begins this weekend with two matches on Friday evening and three on Saturday.

The 10 senior Leitrim clubs are under extra pressure this year – with three teams set to be relegated to intermediate football, as part of a restructuring of the adult men’s club championships in the county.

The plan is to reduce the senior championship to eight teams for the 2025 season.

The action begins on Friday evening with Aughawillan hosting last year’s intermediate winners Annaduff.

Fenagh/St Caillin’s take on the recently crowned Division 1 league champions St Mary’s in the evening’s other match.

Glencar/Manorhamilton begin their challenge on Saturday with a trip to Gortletteragh.

Eamonn O’Hara’s Mohill, the defending county champions, go to Glencar to play Dromahair in round 1.

Each team will play four round-robin matches.

At that the stage, the top two clubs in the group standings will qualify directly for county semi-finals – with the teams placed 3rd-6th contesting two quarter-finals.

The bottom four clubs will head for the attritional relegation play-offs -with three of those teams set to be relegated to intermediate football, which will leave just eight senior clubs in Leitrim contesting the 2025 Connacht Gold Champioonship.
