Local athletes bid for Olympic final in mixed relay

North Sligo’s Chris O’Donnell, Sligo AC’s Lauren Cadden and Tir Chonnaill AC’s Kelly McGrory will all be hoping to help the Ireland 4 x 400 metres mixed relay team reach an Olympic final in Paris on Friday evening.

Ireland are drawn in semi-final 2 of the event on the opening day of the Athletics programme in France.

Semi-final 2 is scheduled for 6:22pm Irish time.

O’Donnell, who narrowly missed out on qualification for the men’s individual 400 metres in Paris, will be a certain starter on the Ireland team.

His European gold medal winning team-mate Rhasidat Adeleke has opted to skip the mixed relay event in Paris, to concentrate on her bid to win a medal in the individual 400m.

Adeleke’s absence opens the door for either Laghey’s McGrory, or Dromard’s Cadden to gain a starting berth on the mixed relay team for Friday’s semi-final.

The top four teams from each semi-final will qualify for Saturday’s Mixed Relay final.

The North Sligo Community Centre in Chris O’Donnell’s home village of Grange will be open to the public on Friday evening from 6pm for a live-screening of the 4x400m mixed relay semi-finals.
