County champions Mohill began their defence of the Leitrim Connacht Gold senior football championship on Saturday evening with a comfortable win over 14-man Dromahair in Glencar.
Eamonn O’Hara’s side ran out comprehensive 3-17 to 0-7 winners in a one-sided round one game, played at St Osnat’s.
Despite the big scoreline, the Mohill manager told Ocean FM Sport afterwards that the champions display was far from vintage.
Glencar/Manorhamilton drew with Gortletteragh on the opening weekend, while Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin’s edged a close game in Leitrim village to get their championship off to a winning start.
The 10 senior Leitrim clubs are under extra pressure this year – with three teams set to be relegated to intermediate football, as part of a restructuring of the adult men’s club championships in the county.
The plan is to reduce the senior championship to eight teams for the 2025 season.
In the Smith Monumentals intermediate champions, there was disappointment for Melvin Gaels as they lost out to Division 3 league winners Aughavas by two points – while Allen Gaels drew with St Mary’s.
