Abtran workers vote heavily in favour of industrial action

Workers at Abtran have voted overwhelmingly to undertake industrial action.

The Independent Worker’s Union balloted members at Abtran’s Sligo and Cork offices at the end of last month.

The dispute stems from demands of workers relating to a pay claim recently launched against the company.

Abtran currently employs around 1,600 staff between their Sligo offices, and those working remotely.

It is not yet known what form of industrial action will be taken by Abtran staff, and a meeting is to be held with workers this Sunday ahead of notifying Abtran of their plans next week.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Alexander Homits of the Independent Workers Union says members have been left with no choice.

A spokesperson for Abtran said: “We are aware of recent activities by the Independent Workers Union (IWU) who have engaged in an unwarranted campaign to target our company and our workforce in order to advance their own objectives. The process that IWU claims was conducted is based on a context that they themselves have contrived and is outside recognised frameworks for employee representation within our company. The selectively presented information they have formulated does not reflect broader workforce interests. Our understanding is that the level of engagement and the outcome they have presented are entirely overstated.”
