Sligo Rovers beaten 5-1 in Athlone

Sligo Rovers are still waiting for their first league win of the season in the women’s SSE Airtricity League Premier Division after suffering a 5-1 loss away to title contenders Athlone Town on Saturday evening.

Rovers were hoping to build on last weekend’s comfortable 5-0 success over Terenure Rangers in the FAI Cup – their first competitive win this season but, playing with 10 players for the majority of the game after the dismissal of goalkeeper Bonnie McKiernan in the early moments of the match, following a collision with Athlone’s Casey Howe,  they found the going tough against reigning cup holders.

Rovers manager Tommy Hewitt was also sent to the stands before the start of the second half.

Gurteen native Roisín Molloy was among the Athlone scorers on the night.

One positive note for the visitors was teenager Anna McDaniel scoring her first senior goal for Rovers in the 75th minute of the game.

Rovers remain rooted to the foot of the table with just three points from their 12 matches played to date.

Saturday’s women’s LOI results
Athlone Town 5 Sligo Rovers 1
Galway Utd 1 Shamrock Rovers 0
Cork City 1 Shelbourne 4
DLR Waves 3 Peamount Utd 2
Treaty Utd 0 Bohemians 1
