Petrol and diesel car purchases remain strong in north west



Less than a quarter of cars purchased in counties Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal from January 2020 to June 2024 were EV.

 

Figures published in the Irish Independent show that despite a strong emphasis on electric vehicles in recent years, consumers continue to purchase petrol and diesel cars.

 

11.2 per cent of vehicles purchased EV cars in Sligo during the period. 66 per cent of motorists purchased either petrol or diesel while hybrid car purchases were at 23 per cent.

 

The EV figure stood at 7.9 per cent in Leitrim.

 

74.9 per cent of vehicles purchased in the county were petrol or diesel with just over 17 per cent hybrid.

 

Figures were similarly low in Donegal where just 7.2 per cent of vehicles were EV.

 

67.8 per cent were petrol or diesel with exactly 25 per cent hybrid.

 

Nationally, Wicklow saw the highest percentage of EV vehicles purchased with 19.8 per cent.

 

Car purchases in Roscommon remained loyal to petrol and diesel with 78.9 per cent there while 28 per cent of vehicles purchased in Dublin were hybrid.
