Rory Gallagher linked with possible return to Derry

Rory Gallagher appears to be among the contenders to succeed Mickey Harte as the next Derry senior football manager.

The Irish News reported on Wednesday that Gallagher is among the nominations submitted by Derry clubs to the county board.

The former Fermanagh footballer and manager was in charge of the Oak Leafers from the end of 2019 until the eve of the Ulster final in 2023, when he was forced to step back just days before the game following allegations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife Nicola.

In the wake of those allegations, Gallagher was temporarily  “temporarily debarred” from all GAA activity – but that ban was lifted earlier this year by the Disputes Resolution Authority and he has since been coaching with Monaghan club Corduff.

Derry, who won the Allianz Football League Division 1 title earlier this year, are on hunt for a new manager following Mickey Harte’s departure in recent weeks, after just one year in charge.
