The EPA has released a statement in relation to the presence of sewerage in the Easkey River in Sligo.
Complaints have previously been raised over the discharge of coloured waste water from the Easkey Waste Water Treatment Plant into the river system.
Following an investigation by Uisce Eireann, they noted that late on Sunday, August 4th, and Monday August 5th, there was a high level of rainfall in the area which gave rise to activation of the storm water overflow at the wastewater treatment plant.
Uisce Eireann also stated that while the storm water overflow system acts as designed, a storm tank is required to manage storm water and reduce the frequency of the activation of the overflow.
The EPA has a compliance investigation open in relation to the discharges, with upgrade works being planned for a new storm tank in the final months of this year, subject to approval and budget availability.
The EPA confirmed they will continue to liaise with Uisce Eireann on improvement measures to be introduced without delay.
