North west farmers could benefit from retirement scheme



Farmers in the north west could be set to benefit from a farm retirement scheme in the next CAP.

 

The Irish Farmers Journal is reporting that following the announcement that he intends to establish a commission on generational renewal, minister for agriculture and Donegal TD Charlie McConalogue says the scheme could be considered.

 

There have been previous calls for extra supports to be given to elderly farmers in terms of supports and succession plans.

 

IFA Sligo chairperson Michael O’Dowd believes it would be a positive step, however, more needs to be done in attracting a younger age bracket to the sector:
