County councils in the north west paid out over €2 million in compensation for public liability claims last year.
Figures published by the Irish Independent show that local authorities are spending large amounts of money for slips, trips and falls every year.
Donegal had the highest amount of compensation paid out in the north west where 97 claims totalled €1.73 million euro in 2023.
59 claims in county Sligo resulted in just over €446,000 being paid out while just under €200,000 was received by 25 claimants in Leitrim, making it the second lowest in terms of cost in Ireland.
Nationally, more than €54m in compensation for public liability claims was handed out in 2023.
Dublin City recorded the highest number of claims with 906 and just under €19.5 million paid out while 14 claims in Fingal saw €47,000 paid out.
