Sligo disability centres receive glowing reports from HIQA



A number of county Sligo designated centres for people with disabilities have received glowing reports from the health watchdog.

Stranbeg, Leacain, Kildalton and An Ghrianán were all subject of the inspections which took place in March and May of this year, the details of which been published recently.

Stranbeg provides residential care for up to seven male and female residents, who are over the age of 18 and have a moderate to severe intellectual disability.

Among the areas found compliant, residents were found to have a good quality of life. This was achieved through a person-centred service that promoted the rights of residents and that ensured their safety.

Residents were also supported to engage in activities that were in line with their wishes.

Leacain, provides for up to four residents with intellectual disabilities who are over the age of 18.

Where additional staff were required, this was planned for and facilitated.

The property was found to be warm, with good lighting and appropriate ventilation.

The premises provided was large and spacious and it was clear that the staff team were working hard to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.

Kildalton provides residential care for up to five male and female residents, who are over the age of 18 and who present with an intellectual disability.

The residents were provided with a good quality, person-centred and rights-based service where they were active participants in their community.

The staff employed were familiar with residents’ support needs and attentive to their requirements.

While An Ghrianán could provide a full-time residential service to up to four residents who are over the age of 18 and have a mild to moderate intellectual disability.

The atmosphere throughout the inspection was relaxed and friendly.

It was clear from observations that residents got on well with each other, had respect for each other and had strong friendships.

Staff were seen to support residents with respect while friendly and caring interactions were observed throughout the inspection days.
