IFI issue statement on rescinding of Owenmore River byelaw

Following the announcement that the byelaw that closed the Owenmore River System has been rescinded with certain limitations, Inland Fisheries Ireland have released a statement.

While worm fishing is banned for fishing for all species for the rest of the season, catch and release is permitted for salmon of any size and seatrout over 40cm.

The IFI Say “All lakes on the system will reopen for angling today also, and local regulations apply as normal.”

They continue by saying “Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan TD has signed a new conservation byelaw regarding the reopening.”

Furthermore, they say “Inland Fisheries Ireland has been investigating the salmon mortalities at the watercourse, and will provide information on the causes of these deaths in due course.”

“The Ballysadare River and all waterways in the Ballisodare system closed to all fishing on July 17th after 1,079 salmon were recorded dead.”

In conclusion, the IFI say “The reopening now, on a catch-and-release-only basis, is to conserve the remaining fish population, which are vulnerable following the July mortalities.”
