Surge in number of parking tickets issued in north west

There were mixed results in the north west in terms of parking tickets issued to motorists in 2023 as local authorities look to crack down on illegal parking.

In figures published by the Irish Independent, at least €14 million was received by councils throughout the country with parking fines ranging from €40 to €150.

The number of fines more than doubled in Donegal.

10,018 fines were handed out last year, compared to 4,892 in 2022.

Leitrim also recorded a decrease in 2023 with 14 fines issued in comparison to just the 1 in 2022.

This is despite Carrick-on-Shannon being the only town in the county where paid parking is in place.

The figure did decrease in Sligo, however, where 4,178 fines were issued in 2023, more than 1,500 less than the 2022 figure of 5,748.

Nationally, motorists in Cork City Council received 49,511 fines last year. Those in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area received 29,845, this was followed by Kerry County Council at 17,674 and Westmeath County Council at 7,424.
