A substantial amount of people in the North West didn’t take all their holidays last year.
Sligo had the lowest among of workers missing out on all their annual leave at 14%, followed by Donegal at 26% while 27% of workers in Leitrim didn’t take all their holidays in 2023.
All three counties came in below the national average, with 42% of people around the country failing to use up all their leave last year.
The data was compiled by FRS Recruitment, their General Manager Lynne McCormack says there are a number of factors at play:

1 in 4 people (23%) in Leitrim didn’t take 5 days of annual leave or more, which in employment terms represents a week’s leave. 20% didn’t take 4 days, 13% had 3 days which went unused, 18% also opted against using up 2 days of leave and 19% had 1 day of their holidays remaining.
One in seven people (14%) in Sligo didn’t take all their holidays last year, according to research on annual leave undertaken by FRS Recruitment. This is below the national average, with 42% of people around the country failing to use up all their leave last year.
1 in 8 people (12%) in Sligo didn’t take 5 days of annual leave or more, which in employment terms represents a week’s leave. 17% didn’t take 4 days, 11% had 3 days which went unused, 18% also opted against using up 2 days of leave and 8% had 1 day of their holidays remaining.
One in four people (26%) in Donegal didn’t take all their holidays last year, according to research on annual leave undertaken by FRS Recruitment. This is below the national average, with more than 4 out of 10 people (42%) around the country failing to use up all their leave last year.
1 in 5 people (21%) in Donegal didn’t take 5 days of annual leave or more, which in employment terms represents a week’s leave. 6% didn’t take 4 days, 16% had 3 days which went unused, 30% opted against using up 2 days of leave and 13% had 1 day of their holidays remaining.
