Sligo woman retains crown as world axe-throwing champion

A Sligo woman has retained her crown as world axe-throwing champion after winning a competition in the UK.

Ceola McGowan, originally from Grange, saw off competitors from around the world to win the World Double Bit Axe Throwing Championships in north Yorkshire.

Ms McGowan, who now lives in Co Wicklow, first won the championship in 2022.

McGowan was unfamiliar with the sport of axe throwing until 2018, when she tried it with a friend.
