Mona McSharry receives rapturous welcome home in Grange

Olympic bronze medallist Mona McSharry received a rapturous reception in her home village of Grange in north Sligo on Tuesday evening as hundreds of wellwishers came out to greet her in the first of two homecoming events.

McSharry, 24, had been unable to return home after the Paris Olympics because of prior commitments in the United States where she has been studying on a sports scholarship at the University of Tennessee.

Accompanied by her family, McSharry arrived in Grange in a bronze Skoda car to the delight of the crowd.

She was joined on stage by her home swimming coach Grace Meade from Marlins Swimming Club in Ballyshannon, her parents Aidan and Viola, brother Mouric and sister Luka – as well as her grandad Paddy.
