Funding sanctioned for Manorhamilton flooding works

Funding has been sanctioned for flood mitigation works on sections of the Owenbeg River in Manorhamilton.

It was granted under the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.

The area has been subject to flooding in the past.

Under the scheme, the Office of Public Works has approved funding for proposed works at Manorhamilton, which include maintaining vegetation along sections of the Owenbeg River as well as branch trimming, tree cutting and the removal of dead wood debris along the Glenfarne River.

It will also include the repair of a trailing wall and channel, where the river merges at the rear of the Pre-School and Bee Park Resource Centre, and the installation of flap valves on outfalls from street drainage gullies at this location.

Since 2009, 32 funding applications by Leitrim County Council have been supported under the scheme.

The purpose of the scheme is to provide funding to Local Authorities to undertake minor flood mitigation works or studies to address localised flooding and coastal protection problems within their administrative areas.

It’s hoped that the upcoming works in Manorhamilton and along the Owenbeg River will deal some of the pinch points locally that are said to need urgent attention.
